From the rugged coasts of North Devon to the historic streets of Exeter and Plymouth, and the rural heartlands of Tiverton and Dartmoor, Freemasonry continues to flourish in every corner of our county.

The Province oversees local Lodges, supports charitable initiatives, and provides guidance to ensure the values of Freemasonry are upheld: Integrity, Friendship, Respect, and Service.

Recent Highlights & Charity Awards

WAKE Fund Distributions
Local Impact

In May 2025, Devonshire Freemasons made a significant impact when they distributed over £30,000 across 20 local charities and community organisations. The grants, made under the auspices of the WAKE Fund (William Alexander Kneel Endowment Fund), were awarded to grassroots initiatives nominated by local lodges.

The WAKE Fund, established in honour of a past Provincial Grand Master, has grown through lodge contributions and careful management, currently yielding an annual distribution of around £50,000. Over time, nearly £1 million has been donated to Devon causes through this fund, benefiting more than 1,000 organisations.

Some highlights from this year’s recipients include:

  • Support for Devon Carers to help unpaid carers maintain their health and wellbeing

  • Funding for community transport in rural areas

  • Help with heritage projects such as church restorations

  • Backing smaller social-welfare initiatives, such as youth services and local hospice support

Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) – Comfort in Times of Stress

One of the Province’s most heartwarming initiatives is Teddies for Loving Care (TLC). Launched in Devonshire in 2008, this programme supplies specially selected teddy bears to A&E departments, children’s wards, and specialist care units across the county.

The idea behind TLC is simple but powerful: a soft, comforting teddy can help calm a child in distress, distract from pain or fear, and act as a friendly companion in difficult hospital surroundings. Hospital staff often use the teddies to explain procedures, reward bravery, or offer comfort.

Some facts about Devonshire’s TLC:

  • In recent years, Devon lodges have expanded the scheme, sending teddies to hospitals such as Torbay, Exeter (RD&E), Derriford in Plymouth, and NDDH in Barnstaple.

  • The Province is now able to claim Gift Aid on donor contributions, boosting the value of charitable donations.
